Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff built Meadham Kirchhoff into one of London’s most closely watched young labels after meeting at Central Saint Martins and relaunching their original menswear project as a womenswear-inclusive brand in 2006. British Fashion Council support, Fashion East and Fashion Forward sponsorship, a 2010 British Fashion Award for Emerging Talent, a major 89-piece Topshop collaboration for Autumn/Winter 2013, a V&A Fashion in Motion presentation in December 2013, and semifinalist status for the 2014 LVMH Prize gave the label the appearance of a rapidly ascending independent fashion power. Its maximalist identity and industry backing, however, did not translate into financial stability. After presenting its final collection, Spring/Summer 2015, during London Fashion Week in September 2014, Meadham Kirchhoff closed in September 2015 in what was described as a “quagmire of debt.” The collapse became a stark example of the economic fragility confronting highly visible independent designers: prestigious sponsorships, museum exposure, and mass-market collaborations could generate enormous cultural attention without producing a sustainable business.
