On April 30, 2023, customers filed a proposed $1 million class-action lawsuit against Adidas and Kanye West over the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Mono Cinder.” The plaintiffs alleged that the defendants marketed the sneakers as scarce, limited-edition products, encouraging consumers to buy at inflated prices, only for the shoes to become more widely available later at lower prices. Their complaint characterized the alleged scarcity messaging as deceptive marketing that caused financial harm to buyers who believed they were purchasing a genuinely restricted release.
The case exposed one of the central tensions in the Yeezy business model: scarcity was not merely a product feature but a major engine of hype, resale value, and consumer urgency. The lawsuit did not establish that Adidas or West had committed fraud; the claims remained allegations requiring adjudication. Nevertheless, its timing was damaging. It arrived months after the partnership’s collapse and after Adidas had begun liquidating remaining Yeezy stock, turning the brand’s celebrated “sellout in minutes” strategy into a potential legal liability and further eroding consumer trust in the limited-release sneaker marketplace.
