Daslu rose from a São Paulo home boutique founded in 1958 by socialites Lúcia Piva de Albuquerque Tranchesi and Lourdes Aranha dos Santos into Brazil’s most extravagant luxury retail institution. Under Lúcia’s daughter, Eliana Tranchesi, the store secured partnerships with Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Jimmy Choo, eventually moving in 2005 to the enormous Villa Daslu: a 17,000-square-meter neoclassical complex with a Maserati dealership, rooftop helipad, wedding facilities, and more than 60 luxury labels. Its debut was an extraordinary display of wealth: guests consumed 2,680 bottles of complimentary Veuve Clicquot champagne even as the building stood beside a São Paulo favela and a government report identified Brazil’s wealth inequality as among the world’s most extreme. Students soon gathered outside the gates asking affluent shoppers for money, turning the boutique into a symbol of the country’s social divide.
