Years of losses ultimately pushed Le Château into a dramatic retail collapse. The company reported losses of approximately CA$35 million annually from 2014 through 2016, was forced to borrow from founder Herschel Segal, and was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2017 after failing to meet listing requirements. In July 2020, after declining business was worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, Le Château warned that there was “significant doubt” it would survive another year. In October, it announced the closure of all 123 Canadian stores. Although the outlets remained open during liquidation, roughly 1,400 employees lost their jobs when the chain ceased operations. The online store shut down in April 2021, and the remaining assets were sold to Suzy’s Inc. in June. Suzy Shier later relaunched the label online and introduced shop-in-shop locations, transforming a once-national retail chain into a much smaller revived brand.
