Before becoming one of couture's most sought-after corsetmakers, Mark Erskine-Pullin—later renamed Mr. Pearl by fashion editor Isabella Blow—worked inside the deliberately grotesque performance world of Leigh Bowery. After moving from South Africa to London, he became a dresser and costume designer at the Royal Opera House and collaborated with Bowery on costumes for Michael Clark's ballet Because We Must, first staged at Sadler's Wells in 1987. He then made costumes for Bowery's nightclub performances, where exaggerated silhouettes, bodily distortion, and theatrical disguise were treated as living sculpture rather than conventional clothing.
The most extreme episode described in the source came at New York's 1989 Love Ball, where Pearl attended as a 'human bustle' incorporated into Bowery's costume. The spectacle helped introduce him to Thierry Mugler, leading to a working relationship and Pearl's move to Paris. His later career retained that same fusion of couture and physical transformation: he made highly structured corsets for Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, and others, and in 1995 appeared as a model in Alexander McQueen's Spring-Summer collection The Birds, his only catwalk modeling role. Pearl also became known for wearing corsets himself, eventually reducing his waist to a reported 18 inches through more than two decades of waist training—an extreme personal practice that made the body itself part of his fashion language.
