The Death Wish 3 Stunt That Left Rocky Taylor with a Broken Pelvis

Death Wish 3 1980s Cursed Sets Unverified 5/5 wildness

During production in 1985, stuntman Rocky Taylor was assigned a highly dangerous jump from a building, across a controlled fire, and into a stack of boxes. Taylor later alleged that director Michael Winner increased the height of the flames after the cameras had begun rolling, without warning him or obtaining his agreement. Taylor completed the jump but missed the boxes by roughly a foot, suffering a broken pelvis, spinal injuries, and burns. He said the injuries damaged his career and 'ruined my life.' Taylor also alleged that Winner visited him in the hospital accompanied by newspaper photographers, lay beside him, and whispered, 'Don't think you can sue me, Rocky, because you can't get away with it.' The account remains an allegation rather than a court-established finding, but Taylor revisited the stunt successfully in 2011, twenty-six years after the accident, turning a notorious production injury into a grim piece of Death Wish 3 lore.

The Silent Sound Movie That Nearly Sank Nova Studios

It's the Life

By 1981, Nova Studios was under pressure to move beyond silent loops as audiences increasingly expected synchronized sound and longer-form video. Masters attempted to answer that demand with It's the Life, but the production went badly: much of the picture was ultimately filmed without usable sound. The failure forced Nova to spend the next two years adapting older silent loops with music, narration, and deliberately asynchronous sexual sound effects in an effort to keep the catalog commercially viable. Nova did not complete another true sound film until 1983, and in the meantime the studio lost critical market share. The production was not a supernatural curse, but it functioned as a business catastrophe, exposing the technological and financial pressures that helped push Nova Studios toward its eventual shutdown in late 1986.

The Vanishing Reels That Delayed A Night to Dismember for Years

A Night to Dismember

Wishman’s only feature horror film became her most notoriously troubled production. A Night to Dismember was begun in the late 1970s, after the success of Halloween had ignited the slasher boom, and starred pornographic actress Samantha Fox. During post-production, multiple reels were destroyed, forcing Wishman to spend several years reconstructing and re-editing the picture. The film went through several versions before it was finally completed in 1983, but the ordeal left it fractured in style and narrative. It never received a conventional theatrical release, and its failure contributed to Wishman’s move to Coral Gables, Florida, where she worked in an adult-novelty store during the mid-1980s. The film later acquired cult status through home video and the revival of interest in Wishman’s work, turning a disastrous production history into part of its legend.

The Premature Explosion That Nearly Killed Eli Wallach on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

During the 1966 filming of Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a bridge-destruction sequence turned into a genuine near-disaster. Clint Eastwood, who was already familiar with the danger posed by film explosives, urged his co-star Eli Wallach to retreat to a hilltop and warned him to stay as far away from the special effects as possible. The caution proved justified: confusion among the crew over the word “Vaya!” caused the bridge to be blown up prematurely, creating a potentially lethal situation for Wallach and anyone still too close to the blast. The incident became one of the production’s most alarming behind-the-scenes episodes, especially because the film was being made in the rough, remote conditions associated with Sergio Leone’s Spanish westerns. Eastwood’s instinct to move Wallach away from the explosives may have prevented a fatal accident, although the source does not report that anyone was injured.

The Fort Lee Fire That Erased Three Years of Eclair Films

Eclair Film Company

Fort Lee, New Jersey, was one of the crucial centers of early American filmmaking, but its studios were vulnerable to the fires that repeatedly threatened nitrate-film operations. In 1914, Eclair’s processing laboratory, storage vault, and offices burned. The blaze destroyed negatives representing almost all of the company’s films made during the preceding three years, wiping out a substantial portion of its early artistic and commercial history. Brulatour responded by helping finance the rebuilding of the laboratory and related facilities, while also funding larger Peerless Pictures studios in Fort Lee. The disaster illustrated the peculiar fragility of silent cinema: films were recorded on highly volatile nitrate stock, and the destruction of a vault could permanently eliminate works that had only recently been released. The fire was not merely a property loss; it erased performances, visual records, and production experiments that could never be recreated. Much of early cinema’s surviving history is therefore shaped as much by storage fires and chemical decay as by what audiences originally saw in theaters.

A Visitor Fainted at the Devil-in-Connecticut Rocking-Chair Exhibit

Zak Bagans’s Haunted Museum

The Haunted Museum briefly faced a real-world incident that seemed to reinforce its carefully cultivated reputation for dangerous objects. On May 27, 2019, an exhibit featuring a rocking chair connected by legend to the alleged demonic-possession case described in The Devil in Connecticut was shut down after a visitor fainted. The chair’s notoriety derives from the controversial case of a Connecticut family and the claims that a young man’s behavior involved demonic influence, a story later popularized through books and screen adaptations. The fainting itself was a documented visitor incident, but it did not prove that the chair was haunted or that supernatural forces caused the medical episode. After a temporary closure, the exhibit reopened on June 7, 2019, allowing the museum to preserve the attraction’s eerie narrative while treating the event as a safety matter rather than verified evidence of possession.

The London Processing-Plant Fire That Erased Burlingham’s First Alpine Masterpieces

Frederick Burlingham and the British and Colonial Kinematograph Company

Burlingham’s earliest Alpine films suffered a classic silent-film catastrophe before most audiences ever had the chance to see them. In 1913, while he was working for London’s British and Colonial Kinematograph Company, he had filmed ambitious ascents of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, along with other Alpine expeditions. The original negatives were sent to the company’s processing operation on Endell Street, but a fire there in October destroyed them before duplicate prints could be made. That timing made the loss especially devastating: the films were not merely damaged copies of surviving works but the sole photographic records of Burlingham’s pioneering climbs. Much of his broader travelogue output would eventually disappear as well, leaving only fragments for modern researchers. A nearly complete print of The Ascent of the Matterhorn was remarkably rediscovered in 1953 inside a cabinet in Zermatt, Switzerland, but the original negative was reportedly lost in an Atlantic shipwreck. The surviving print is now regarded as the only known copy and as an important early document of an Alpine ascent, while the Mont Blanc material appears to have vanished entirely.
