20th Century Fox attempted to keep The Omen franchise alive almost immediately after The Final Conflict, planning Omen IV: Armageddon 2000 for a late-1984 release. The project had a screenplay by Stanley Mann, who had written Damien: Omen II, and was based on Gordon McGill’s 1982 novel. Graham Baker, director of The Final Conflict, was initially expected to return, but scheduling problems connected to his film Impulse forced him out. The studio then turned to television director Horace D. Burton, only for the production to suffer another devastating setback when Burton died unexpectedly in 1983. With the project stalled and its creative leadership repeatedly collapsing, Fox ultimately canceled the film rather than push forward. McGill later wrote Omen V: The Abomination, published in 1985, but the planned cinematic continuation never materialized; the next screen sequel, Omen IV: The Awakening, did not arrive until 1991 and was made as a television film in a failed attempt to revive the series.
