Paul Bartel and co-writer Richard Blackburn had a finished script for a direct sequel to their 1982 cult hit Eating Raoul, tentatively titled Bland Ambition. Bartel’s own description of the story — a satirical fable in which Paul and Mary Bland run a booming Country Kitchen until a high-handed governor provokes them into a media-fueled political battle that culminates in a run for California governor — was ready to go into production. The project was on the verge of shooting in April 1989 when its financier, Vestron, abruptly withdrew its financial backing roughly ten days before cameras were due to roll. The last-minute pullout killed the production; with no alternate financing in place and pre-production commitments already made, Bland Ambition was shelved and never filmed.
