The Day of the Dolphin was initially meant to be a Roman Polanski project for United Artists. In 1969, Polanski was in London scouting locations and preparing to write and direct the film when catastrophe struck his private life and abruptly ended the production plan. On August 9, 1969, his pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered at the couple’s Beverly Hills home by members of Charles Manson’s cult. Polanski returned to the United States in the aftermath and abandoned the dolphin thriller altogether. The project then passed through another proposed director, Franklin Schaffner, before producer Joseph E. Levine acquired it and ultimately handed it to Mike Nichols. Although the finished 1973 film had no direct connection to the Tate murders, its production history remained marked by one of Hollywood’s most notorious crimes: a major studio project was reshaped because its intended director was dealing with the murder of his wife and the collapse of his personal world.
