One of Dawn of the Dead’s strangest production details was not a special-effects illusion at all: at least one skeleton seen in the film was genuinely human. Make-up artist Tom Savini rented the skeleton from Larry Wintersteller, who had acquired it in the early 1970s. It was later sold to Marilynn Wick, the proprietor of a costume shop in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, who apparently did not realize what she had been given. The skeleton had been used during production with fake flesh still attached to it when authorities eventually discovered it.

The daily feature is taking an intermission. There’s still an entire archive to explore.
