Steve Golin and partner Joni Sighvatsson launched Propaganda Films in 1986 and, over the next decade, turned it into an industry behemoth — the largest music-video and commercial production company of its day, boasting more MTV Video Awards and Cannes Palme d'Ors than any rival and serving as the launchpad for directors such as David Fincher, Michael Bay, Spike Jonze, Gore Verbinski and Antoine Fuqua. That independent mojo, however, collided with the late-1990s wave of media consolidation. Golin and Sighvatsson sold Propaganda to PolyGram (the entry date is often cited but inconsistently reported), and when PolyGram itself was swallowed by Seagram in 1998 the power dynamics shifted decisively. According to contemporary accounts and later biographies, the Seagram takeover effectively cost Golin operational control of the company he had built; he officially exited Propaganda in 1999.
