John Hurt's casting created an extraordinary scheduling collision with Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate, a production already notorious for falling badly behind schedule because of Cimino's perfectionism. Hurt spent so much time waiting for something to do on the troubled film that he was able to perform as John Merrick in The Elephant Man during the interim, before returning to complete Heaven's Gate. The role was hardly a respite: David Lynch's production required Tucker's elaborate prosthetic makeup to be applied for seven or eight hours and removed over another two, leaving Hurt to shoot long days while largely immobilized beneath the mask. After his first experience with the process, Hurt reportedly telephoned his girlfriend and said, 'I think they have finally managed to make me hate acting.' The production reduced his workload to alternate days because of the strain. Though no accident or death occurred, the combination of the chaotic Heaven's Gate schedule and punishing prosthetic regimen became one of the film's most grueling behind-the-scenes episodes.
