The Four-Year Production Delay That Turned Animal Behavior into Alexa Kenin’s Posthumous Final Film

Animal Behavior / Alexa Kenin 1980s Tragedy Archive: verified 3/5 wildness

Animal Behavior began production in 1984 under director Jenny Bowen, with Alexa Kenin filming her scenes as Sheila Sandusky. The project then stalled and proceeded intermittently for the next four years, an unusually fragmented production history for a modest comedy. Before the film could be completed or released, Kenin died, transforming her contribution into a posthumous final screen appearance. Producer Kjehl Rasmussen eventually helped finish the picture, but the production’s troubled authorship created another oddity: although Bowen had initiated and directed the project, the completed film credited its director under the pseudonym H. Anne Riley. Animal Behavior was finally released in 1989, five years after Kenin’s scenes had been shot, leaving the film as both an artifact of an abandoned-and-revived production and the last released work of its young performer.

The Fatal 2009 Fall That Ended Producer Dick Berg’s Career

Dick Berg

Richard “Dick” Berg, the screenwriter and television producer associated with projects including the 1985 miniseries Space and Wallenberg: A Hero's Story, died on September 1, 2009, at the age of 87. According to the biographical record, Berg suffered a fall at his home in Los Angeles. The incident was not connected to a film set or production accident, but it brought a quiet and abrupt end to the career of a Hollywood professional whose work had stretched from the studio era into television’s major historical miniseries period. Berg had entered the industry after graduating from Lehigh University in 1942, initially working at Republic Pictures as a dialogue coach for Roy Rogers and other cowboy performers before moving into screenwriting and producing.

The Final Hollywood Hotel Room of Joe Bodolai

Joe Bodolai

Joe Bodolai, the American-Canadian comedy producer and writer who helped shape programs such as Comics! and The Kids in the Hall and co-wrote the first draft of Wayne's World with Mike Myers, died in a Hollywood hotel room on December 26, 2011, at the age of 63. His death was reported as an apparent suicide. No suicide note was found, leaving investigators, colleagues, and admirers without a direct explanation of his final intentions. Three days earlier, however, a lengthy entry had appeared on Bodolai's blog under the ominous title "If this were your last day alive what would you do?" The timing gave the post a disturbing retrospective significance, although the available account does not establish that it was definitively a suicide note or that it directly explained his death. Bodolai's final years followed a career marked by both creative achievement and professional disappointment: after helping secure a licence for Canada's Comedy Network in 1996, he expected to become the channel's head but was passed over by its owners, prompting his permanent return to the United States. His death thus became a bleak coda to the story of a behind-the-scenes comedy figure who had helped launch other performers' careers while receiving far less public recognition himself.

Ash Christian’s Sudden Death at 35 During a Mexican Vacation

Ash Christian

Ash Christian, the Texas-born filmmaker who began writing and directing short films as a teenager and moved to Los Angeles at 16, died unexpectedly on August 14, 2020, at the age of 35. Christian was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on vacation when he suffered a heart attack in his sleep. His death abruptly ended a career that had already spanned acting, directing, producing, and Broadway: at 19, he wrote, directed, and starred in Fat Girls, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won Outfest’s 2006 Award for Outstanding Emerging Talent. Through his company Cranium Entertainment, he later co-produced films including Hurricane Bianca, Social Animals, 1985, Burn, and Chick Fight, while also working on television programs such as The Good Wife and The Good Fight and producing the musical Next to Normal. The circumstances were not connected to a film set or known production accident; the tragedy lay in the sudden loss of a prolific young independent filmmaker and producer whose career had begun unusually early and was still expanding.

Chuck Vincent’s 1991 Death During the AIDS Crisis

Chuck Vincent

Chuck Vincent, born Charles Vincent Dingley, died in Key West, Florida, on September 23, 1991, just seventeen days after his 51st birthday. His death was attributed to complications from AIDS, ending a career that had moved from regional theater and Off-Broadway work into sophisticated softcore and hardcore filmmaking, mainstream-adjacent B movies, and Playboy Channel production. Vincent had directed the acclaimed 1981 pornographic feature Roommates, worked frequently with performer Veronica Hart, and later directed the fantasy film Warrior Queen with Sybil Danning and Donald Pleasence. The available biographical record does not describe a specific production accident, final illness, or public controversy surrounding his death, but his loss at 51 was part of the devastating toll AIDS took on gay artists and performers during the early 1990s. He left behind an unusual cross-industry career spanning experimental theater, adult cinema, cable entertainment, and low-budget genre film.

The 1991 Fratricide That Ended the Mitchell Brothers’ Porn Empire

Jim and Artie Mitchell

On February 27, 1991, the volatile partnership behind San Francisco’s notorious O’Farrell Theatre ended in bloodshed. Jim Mitchell drove to the Corte Madera home of his younger brother Artie carrying a .22 rifle inherited from their father. Friends and associates had reportedly urged Jim to intervene in Artie’s increasingly destructive behavior, which was linked to alcoholism and cocaine abuse. Inside the house, Artie’s lover, O’Farrell dancer Julie Bajo, was present but did not see the shooting. She heard the gunfire and immediately called 911; police arrived within minutes and arrested Jim. Artie had been shot three times—in the head, abdomen, and right arm. The case became one of the Bay Area’s most sensational trials, transforming the brothers from countercultural pornography entrepreneurs into national crime figures. Jim was represented by longtime friend Michael Kennedy, who argued against a murder conviction. The jury rejected murder but found Jim guilty of voluntary manslaughter, and he received a six-year sentence. He served approximately three years at San Quentin before returning to the O’Farrell in 1997. The family remained divided over the killing: Jim’s supporters portrayed it as the culmination of Artie’s addiction and erratic conduct, while Artie’s children later called it a premeditated killing motivated by greed and jealousy. Jim died of an apparent heart attack in 2007 and was buried beside his brother.

The AIDS-Era Death of Surge Studios Co-Founder Steve Taylor

Steve Taylor and Surge Studios

Steve Taylor, born Richard Cole in Dixfield, Maine, became one of the largely unseen architects of the gay adult-film industry’s transition into the 1980s. After meeting performer Andrew “Drew” Okun—professionally known as Al Parker—while cycling in Hermosa Beach in 1973, Taylor and Parker formed both a domestic and professional partnership that lasted nearly fourteen years. In 1980 they founded Surge Studios, with Parker serving as its best-known performer and public-facing creative figure while Taylor handled much of the business operation, production work, and still photography. Taylor’s importance was therefore often greater than his screen credits or publicity suggested, and he was involved as the company began promoting safer-sex practices during the early AIDS crisis. Taylor died in Los Angeles on September 9, 1986, from complications related to AIDS, at only forty-six years old. His death came during a period when AIDS was devastating gay communities and the adult-film world, while fear, stigma, and limited medical understanding made the loss especially painful and politically charged. Although Taylor had worked behind the scenes as much as in front of the camera, his death marked the disappearance of a key producer and business figure from an important period in gay cinema. His remains were cremated and scattered at sea, giving the story a stark final image after a career spent helping build a studio whose public identity was more closely associated with his partner.
