Long before the public fascination with the Barrymore dynasty calcified into myth, sibling rivalry turned ugly in the mid-1920s when Lionel and his younger brother John came to blows over actress Irene Fenwick. Fenwick had been one of John's lovers and later became Lionel's wife; the brothers argued fiercely about her chastity and propriety. The dispute was not a mere family squabble but a public fracture: the two men did not speak for two years and avoided each other's company, a conspicuous silence in a family that was Broadway royalty. The rupture only visibly healed at the premiere of John Barrymore's lavish 1926 film Don Juan, when the brothers were seen together again. The episode left a permanent stain on their relationship — it was symptomatic of a family in which professional collaboration and private scandal were continuously entangled, and it colored subsequent public and private interactions between Lionel and John for years.
