One of the film’s strangest afterlives came through its instrumental score rather than its troubled story. Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin Jr. wrote a piece called “Cotton’s Dream” for Stanley Kramer’s 1971 film Bless the Beasts and Children. The melody later found a second life through Columbia’s television operations, but its most famous transformation occurred in 1976, when ABC’s Wide World of Sports used it beneath a montage of Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci’s routines from the 1976 Summer Olympics. The emotionally sweeping music became so strongly associated with Comăneci that it was re-edited, lengthened, and released under the new title “Nadia’s Theme.”
