W. D. Richter compiled a 300-page reference volume called The Essential Buckaroo from Earl Mac Rauch’s unfinished drafts, character notes, and discarded storylines. That material revealed a much darker version of the film’s mythology, including a villain named Hanoi Xan, the leader of the World Crime League. An early opening would have shown Buckaroo’s father being murdered by Xan and Jamie Lee Curtis playing Buckaroo’s mother. David Begelman was adamant that every reference to Xan be removed, including the entire opening sequence. The decision helped steer the finished film away from a revenge-oriented crime saga and toward its better-known comic science-fiction tone, while leaving behind a large amount of unused continuity that later contributed to Buckaroo Banzai’s reputation as a movie with an enormous unseen mythology.
