Menahem Golan’s original conception of The Apple was far more religious and fantastical than the film audiences eventually saw. The screenplay devoted roughly three-quarters of its story to Heaven, including a prologue called “Paradise Day” in which Mr. Topps, played by Joss Ackland, creates the first human, Alphie, from a rock and sends him to Earth. Golan spent approximately $1 million on the sequence, filming it at CCC Film’s Spandau Studios in West Berlin with a mixture of real animals, artificial creatures, and elaborate sets. The result was less divine spectacle than production nightmare: dinosaur pieces repeatedly fell apart, a tiger fled the set, and the climactic material even required Vladek Sheybal, playing the satanic Mr. Boogalow, to perform a dance that ended with him falling into a river.
