The record behind the story

The Price of Moving Up
Investigative question
How did NXIVM's promise of personal growth help create a hierarchy in which advancement, obedience and damaging personal disclosures could be converted into instruments of coercion?
Event boundary
The entry follows NXIVM's paid self-improvement hierarchy into DOS, the secret group Keith Raniere formed in 2015, and the federal case culminating in his 2019 convictions, 2020 sentence, 2022 direct appeal and 2025 post-trial appeal. It is not a biography of every participant or a summary of every documentary allegation.

What the record establishes
The indictment records the accusations prosecutors made; the verdict and appellate decisions establish the conduct adjudicated in court. The record does not support treating every NXIVM participant as a perpetrator or every course participant as a DOS member. Raniere contested his convictions, which remain affirmed.
