The Saransk EPO Finding Behind Emelyanov’s Eight-Year Ban
A 2015 out-of-competition test, abnormal blood-passport data, and a disputed denial culminated in an eight-year period of ineligibility imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On 7 April 2017, the Court of Arbitration for Sport imposed an eight-year period of ineligibility on Stanislav Emelyanov, beginning that day. The sanction concerned an adverse analytical finding for erythropoietin from an out-of-competition test conducted at the race-walking centre in Saransk on 2 June 2015. The result became the central event in a disciplinary sequence that extended Emelyanov’s exclusion from competition well beyond his earlier ban.
That earlier sanction dated to 15 December 2012, when the ARAF Anti-Doping Commission imposed a two-year period of ineligibility. The CAS award identified it as Emelyanov’s first violation. It described the Saransk matter as a separate prior violation, placing the 2015 EPO finding after an already established period of ineligibility rather than treating it as an isolated case.
The proceeding also drew on Emelyanov’s athlete biological passport. Seven blood samples were collected between 11 October 2015 and 6 September 2016. In the first two, the CAS award recorded high hemoglobin and low reticulocyte values, with OFF-scores of 110.70 and 118.20. The expert panel wrote that the pattern was typical of the use and subsequent discontinuation of an erythropoietic stimulant or the recent application of a blood transfusion. The award recorded the panel’s conclusion that the profile was highly likely to have been caused by prohibited substances or methods.
The IAAF notified Emelyanov on 8 February 2017 of alleged abnormalities in his biological passport and gave him until 22 February to respond. In an email sent that day, he denied using a prohibited substance or prohibited method. The expert panel’s second report said his arguments could not explain the hematological abnormalities in the profile. On 6 March, the IAAF charged him by letter with an alleged third anti-doping rule violation. The record thus carried his denial alongside the panel’s rejection of the explanation offered.
The CAS decision fixed the consequence of that record. For the 2 June 2015 EPO finding, it imposed eight years of ineligibility starting on 7 April 2017. The Saransk test, the blood-profile analysis, and the earlier sanction were not separate entries in a closed file; together, they defined the period during which Emelyanov could not compete. The operative fact was the length of the order: eight years.
