On 30 December 2019 at 19:39, neurologist Liu Wen posted in his Wuhan Red Cross Hospital WeChat group that a coronavirus-related infectious pneumonia case had been confirmed at the Second Hospital in Houhu District. He warned nursing colleagues not to visit areas near the Huanan market and said SARS appeared to have been confirmed, while later explaining that he was trying to alert medical staff to a possible person-to-person infection risk based on information he had heard.
On 31 December, hospital-related departments interviewed Liu, demanded the source of his information, and told him not to spread fabricated rumors. According to Liu's account to Caixin, police summoned him to a station around 2 January 2020, recorded a transcript, requested his fingerprints, and questioned the origin of the warning; unlike Li Wenliang, he said he received no written reprimand. The source does not document a later prosecution or formal disciplinary finding, but the questioning illustrates how early warnings by medical workers were treated as a public-order problem during the outbreak's opening days.
