In early 2008, Jimmy Mohlala, Speaker of South Africa’s Mbombela Local Municipality and a vice-president of the South African Football Association, challenged alleged irregularities in multimillion-rand contracts connected to the Mbombela Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Reporting by the Mail & Guardian said the tenders were allegedly awarded using fraudulent tax-clearance certificates and that municipal manager Jacob Dladla faced accusations of tender manipulation, employee harassment, and withholding infrastructure information. Some ANC officials were accused of trying to suppress a council investigation, while the ANC moved to recall and discipline Mohlala after he refused to step down.
On 4 January 2009, two armed men reportedly confronted Mohlala outside his home in Kanyamazane, shot his 19-year-old son, and fatally shot Mohlala as he fled. Two police officers were arrested in 2010, but charges were withdrawn for insufficient evidence; his widow said she received no case update after 2014. In a 2017 Mail & Guardian investigation, former mayor Lassy Chiwayo accused then-ANC provincial chairperson David Mabuza of being directly or indirectly responsible, claims denied by ANC officials and never followed by charges. Mpumalanga established a special unit for political killings in 2024, listing Mohlala’s case among those under review. The assassination remains unresolved, and the reported connection between the murder and stadium-contract allegations remains an allegation rather than a judicial finding.
