Michael DeKort, an engineer and project manager at Lockheed Martin, said he identified faulty equipment being installed in U.S. Coast Guard vessels under the Integrated Deepwater System Program in 2003. According to DeKort, he alerted Lockheed Martin’s chief executive and board of directors but was ignored and removed from his project-management position. He then reported the problems to the Department of Homeland Security and criticized what he viewed as inadequate cooperation from the Coast Guard. Attempts to bring the allegations to The Washington Post and the Associated Press did not succeed.
On August 3, 2006, DeKort published a YouTube video describing the alleged equipment and program problems. Lockheed Martin laid him off later that year, after which he filed a whistleblower lawsuit against Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. The case was settled in 2010 for an undisclosed amount, without a public accounting of the settlement’s terms in the supplied source. DeKort received the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology public service award and the IEEE Barus Ethics Award in 2008, and appeared in the 2013 documentary War on Whistleblowers.
